Weather in the upper Midwest can change on a dime, and a few years ago this was certainly the case in Nebraska. In March of 2019, a storm of epic proportions was building over the plains. On satellite it looked like a hurricane but it was closing in on the very middle of the country. The day ahead of it, the weather was beautiful…around 70 degrees, sunny, with very little wind. The cranes did their usual thing and returned to the river at sunset. On the way back into the hotel however, semi-trucks were stopping…lining the roads going back into Kearney. Interstate 80 was due to be closed west of there, and by morning, the temperature would drop to single digits with 40 mph winds and blizzard like conditions. It seemed unbelievable things could change so much from one day to the next, but sure enough, by morning, everything was closed down. Venturing out around 11am, we found the cranes in the fields…feeding… despite the snow, wind and cold…they took it all in stride.
