I continue to be amazed by the Cicadas. You’ll find holes in the ground where they came out, and often find some on a tree trunk, at varying heights. They work to shed their shell and then continue to climb or fly up higher in the trees. I’ve caught some working to extract themselves from this outer skin. Some make decently quick work of it, and others seem to get stalled out…I don’t know if they end up getting picked off by a bird or finishing the job overnight. Most are gone by the next morning. One thing I know is now that most have emerged, it’s pretty loud around here during the day. The birds, for the most part, are not needing any supplemental feed…seeds, sunflowers, peanuts, jelly…its pretty much going untouched. I’m told this will last a few more weeks and then be done for another 17 years.
