Iowa’s state bird is the American Goldfinch.  It received that designation way back in 1933.  The decision to make the Goldfinch Iowa’s state bird was made through a vote by schoolchildren. The reasons for its selection include its widespread presence throughout the state, its attractive plumage, and its cheerful song, which made it a favorite among the childre of Iowa.   Smart kids I’d say.
